Outstanding introduction
This is the one to get if you are serious about javascript.
I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. I particularly liked the way the author builds up from simple cases before introducing the harder material. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.
Strong content, uneven pacing. I would still recommend it.
This is the third book I have read on data visualization this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

Some sections were excellent and others felt like filler.
I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. The explanations are careful without being condescending, which is a difficult balance to strike. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. The balance between theory and practice is well judged; neither side dominates. Three stars feels about right. It will stay on my shelf, but it will not be the first one I reach for.

This is the one to get if you are serious about quantum computing.
There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with quantum computing.
A superb guide. The examples are small but complete.
This is the third book I have read on databases & big data this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.
Well worth picking up if you already have the basics.
I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
